The video analytics market and video surveillance market are rapidly making their strides, and big players are already trying to create an impact in the industry. In recent times for intelligent analysis, pixel count has been added to camera specs by automation and intelligent analysis. More focus is being given to computer vision techniques, powered by diverse sectors like automated vehicles and the Internet of Battlefield Things, and by future-gen edge-AI chips and GPUs. Currently, the surveillance cameras are better connected and smarter, and this has drastically increased the edge capabilities. In initial stages, the choice of perimeter defence, intrusion detection, people counting were all limited to manufacturer’s on-device offering, but they realized that only by making the platform available to independent developers, real potential could be seen.

There are many third-party developers who create analytics to work on the IP cameras produced by leading manufacturers directly. To reach a broader market, this has to be applied on various platforms. Cue Bosch and their newly started Security and Safety Things (SAST) is an independent startup wholly owned by Bosch to create a global industry standard, developing an open operating system, and building an app store. SAST is expected to reach the market this year, and it will provide an open IoT platform for security cameras, this will pave the way for a newer generation of AI-based security apps.

SAST is a camera operating system that works on Android, with an app store. The solution aims to become available cross-platform. SAST is focused on Open Security and Safety Alliance (OSSA) which is expected to provide specifications and standards for common components including an OS, IoT infrastructure, drive for an improved level of performance for safety and security solutions, and collective approach for data security and privacy. SAST is an open platform that allows work on a technology stack-based on an already existing framework; people who come from various industries can immediately start to develop. The SAST approach will take on industry verticals, prioritized by their need and scale, and then, it ensures default apps and more specialized apps are developed on the platform.
