Making eCommerce Safer: A Guideline

In a quest to set up successful businesses, sometimes the concerned parties forget to take note of the risks that can lead to disastrous consequences for them. So it is advisable that all eCommerce retailers should prioritize safety and take measures to eliminate threats from hackers and attackers.

While setting up a business online, the website needs to be hosted by a server. The servers that are chosen to host the websites gain access to sensitive data, including that of the transactions made by the customers. This makes it necessary for eCommerce retailers to select a host that can guarantee safety and security. Otherwise, unreliable hosts can leak data to third parties, which could prove very dear for the customers as well as the companies.  

But a reliable host is not sufficient as a safety measure. Cybercriminals can still steal information from the source. To prevent such access, encryption is essential. The security arrangements provided by the hosting servers must also be robust. A useful tool for enhancing security in eCommerce is by using SSL protection. SSL or secure socket layer works by encrypting the data that is transferred between the browser and the servers and protects the customer information from being hijacked even if they use unsafe public wifi to access the website.

A continuous monitoring system should be developed. This would allow real-time checks and timely detection of threats and subsequent elimination of the same before any real damage is done. Backing up important data provides a safety net in case there is a data loss. Recovery can be fast and possible if the data has been backed up at a separate location. This would also ensure that the functioning is brought smoothly on track without much losses or delays.

Finally, a standardized system of handling user data should be put in place and complied with. A set of policies that can ensure a basic level of safety for the data that gets accumulated online is imperative. Europe did precisely this in 2018 when it passed a set of rules under the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This legislation makes it mandatory for eCommerce websites to comply with its regulations failing which there could be penalties.

It is high time eCommerce retailers invest in security and act with responsibility to mitigate issues that pose threats.
